ป้อมพระสุเมรุ เป็นป้อมปราการที่สร้างขึ้นในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 1 ในสมัยนั้นได้มีการสร้างป้อมปราการ 14 แห่งเพื่อป้องกันพระนคร แต่เมื่อเวลาผ่านไป ป้อมปราการหมดความจำเป็น จึงถูกรื้อถอนไป ป้อมพระสุเมรุเป็น 1 ใน 2 ป้อมที่ยังคงเหลืออยู่ อีกป้อมหนึ่งคือป้อมมหากาฬ ชื่อป้อมพระสุเมรุได้นำมาตั้งเป็นชื่อถนนพระสุเมรุ

ป้อมพระสุเมรุซึ่งสร้างมาแต่รัชกาลที่ 1 มีลักษณะสวยงามและเป็นประโยชน์ใช้สอยมากมาย มีเชิงเทิน ช่องยิงปืน ห้องเก็บกระสุนดินดำ และอาวุธยุทโธปกรณ์ต่าง ๆ แต่ก็ชำรุดทรุดโทรมเป็นธรรมดา จนถึง พ.ศ. 2524 กรมศิลปากรได้ซ่อมแซมบูรณะตามรูปแบบเดิมจากภาพถ่ายในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 จนแลดูสง่างามเหมือนเดิม และยังปรับปรุงบริเวณโดยรอบให้เป็นสวนสาธารณะอีกด้วย โดยให้ชื่อว่า "สวนสันติชัยปราการ" มีพลับพลา ชื่อว่า "พระที่นั่งสันติชัยปราการ"
