พระองค์ทรงใช้ดนตรีให้เป็นประโยชน์ทางอ้อม ในหลายด้าน เช่น ทรงใช้ดนตรีเป็นสื่อผูกพันสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์กับนิสิตนักศึกษา โดยเสด็จฯ ไปทรงดนตรีร่วมกับนิสิตนักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยต่าง ๆ อยู่นานกว่า 10 ปี
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีการรวมนักดนตรีสมัครเล่นมารวมตัวกันตั้งเป็นวงขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก ขณะที่ทรงประทับ ณ พระที่นั่งอัมพรสถาน ประกอบด้วยพระราชวงศ์ผู้ใหญ่ที่ทรงคุ้นเคย และเมื่อโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดตั้งสถานีวิทยุ อ.ส. ต่อมาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้นักดนตรีรุ่นหนุ่มมาเล่นดนตรีร่วมกับวงลายคราม จึงเกิดเป็นวงดนตรี “อ.ส.วันศุกร์” มีลักษณะพิเศษ คือ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงร่วมบรรเลงกับสมาชิกของวง ออกอากาศกระจายเสียงทางสถานีวิทยุประจำวันศุกร์ และยังทรงจัดรายการเพลงเอง ทรงเลือกแผ่นเสียงเองในระยะแรก บางครั้งก็โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีการขอเพลง และจะทรงรับโทรศัพท์ด้วยพระองค์เองทุกวันศุกร์ โดยที่ผู้ขอเพลงก็ไม่ทราบว่า ผู้รับโทรศัพท์เป็นใคร และวันอาทิตย์เป็นวันฝึกซ้อม วงดนตรี อ.ส.วันศุกร์ ยังเป็นวงดนตรีที่โปรดให้ไปร่วมบรรเลงในงาน “วันทรงดนตรี ” ตามที่มหาวิทยาลัยต่าง ๆ กราบบังคมทูลเชิญเสด็จฯ เพื่อทรงสังสรรค์ร่วมกับนิสิตนักศึกษา เป็นการส่วนพระองค์ ก่อนที่จะยกเลิกไป เพราะทรงมีพระราชกรณียกิจเพิ่มมากขึ้น

ในด้านดนตรีไทย พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว มีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะอนุรักษ์ดนตรีไทยและนาฏยศิลป์ไทยไว้ให้คงอยู่คู่ชาติไทยตลอดไป โดยมีพระราชกระแสรับสั่งให้นักดนตรีไทยช่วยกันรักษาระดับเสียงของดนตรีไทยไว้ เพื่อเป็นมาตรฐานของวงดนตรีรุ่นหลัง ได้พระราชทานทุนทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ให้กรมศิลปากรจัดพิมพ์หนังสือ “โน้ตเพลงไทย เล่ม 1” เพื่อรวบรวมและรักษาศิลปะทางดนตรีไทยไว้ให้เป็นหลักฐาน และมาตรฐานต่อไป และทรงสนับสนุนให้มีการค้นคว้าวิจัยบันไดเสียงของดนตรีไทย โดยใช้เครื่องมือทางวิทยาศาสตร์
นอกจากนั้นพระองค์ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดพิธีครอบประธานครูโขนละครและต่อกระบวนรำเพลงหน้าพาทย์องค์พระพิราพ ซึ่งเป็นเพลงหน้าพาทย์ชั้นสูงในวิชาดนตรีและนาฏยศิลป์ไทยอีกด้วย ซึ่งกิจกรรมทั้ง 2 อย่างนั้น ดำเนินมาจนถึงจุดที่ใกล้จะสูญสิ้นแล้ว จึงนับได้ว่าทรงเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์ที่อนุรักษ์ศิลปะของไทย เพื่อให้เป็นมรดกของชาติสืบต่อไป
