สมัยประวัติศาสตร์นิยมแบ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาต่างๆ ดังนี้

1) ประวัติศาสตร์สมัยโบราณ แต่ละประเทศจะเริ่มไม่พร้อมกัน ในสมัยประวัติศาสตร์สากลเริ่มตั้งแต่อารยธรรมเมโสโปเตเมีย อารยธรรมลุ่มแม่น้ำไนล์ อารยธรรมกรีก-โรมันและสิ้นสุดใน ค.ศ.476 เมื่อกรุงโรมแตก

2) ประวัติศาสตร์สมัยกลาง เริ่มภายหลังที่กรุงโรมแตกในค.ศ. 476 จนกระทั่งค.ศ. 1453 เมื่อพวกที่นับถือศาสนาอิสลามตีกรุงคอนสเตนติโนเปิลของโรมันตะวันออกแตกจนกระทั่งสิ้น สุดสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2

3) ประวัติศาสตร์สมัยใหม่ เริ่มหลังจากที่กรุงคอนสเตนติโนเปิลแตกจนกระทั่งสิ้นสุดสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2

4) ประวัติศาสตร์ร่วมสมัย เริ่มภายหลังสิ้นสุดสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 จนถึงปัจจุบัน

การแบ่งยุคสมัยดังกล่าว นิยมใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลาย ทำให้เข้าใจช่วงเวลาต่างๆ ได้ง่าย เพราะไม่ได้มีการกล่าวถึงศักราช แต่ในประวัติศาสตร์ไทยไม่ค่อยนิยมใช้ มักจะใช้อาณาจักรหรือราชธานีเป็นตัวกำหนดแทน
