circa 1915: Mrs. Evalyn Walsh McLean, one of the owners of the famous Hope diamond, a 44 1/2 carat stone which, legend has it, was taken from the eye of a Burmese idol and was supposed to bring bad luck to anyone who owns it. Mrs. McLean died of pneumonia in Washington, aged 60.
