สังคมทุกสังคมย่อมหลีกเลี่ยงความขัดแย้งไม่ได้ ความขัดแย้งในสังคมจึงเป็นเรื่องปกติ ปัญหาความขัดแย้งเกิดขึ้นเพราะฝ่ายใดฝ่ายหนึ่งต้องการผลประโยชน์ที่มากกว่า โดยในภาพรวมจะถือได้ว่าสังคมนั้นยังอยู่ได้อย่างมีความสมานฉันท์ แต่เมื่อใดก็ตามที่ความขัดแย้งถึงจุดที่ไม่สามารถจะแก้ไขได้ ทางเลือกของสังคมก็จะถูกจำกัดลง โดยมีทางออกอยู่สองทางคือ การพยายามแก้ไขความขัดแย้งโดยสันติวิธี ด้วยการเจรจา หรือแก้ไขความขัดแย้งด้วยการใช้กำลังหรือความรุนแรง
