เป็นเขื่อนดินกักเก็บน้ำที่ยาวที่สุดในประเทศไทย ตามแนวพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเพื่อป้องกันปัญหาน้ำท่วม เริ่มดำเนินการก่อสร้างในวันที่ 2 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2537 โดยกรมชลประทานเป็นผู้รับผิด
