STUDY OBJECTIVES
The goal of the Counseling Older Adults to Control Hypertension (COACH) trial is to evaluate the effect of a therapeutic lifestyle intervention [delivered via group classes and individual motivational interviewing sessions (MINT-TLC)] versus health education (HE), on BP reduction among 250 African-American and Latino senior-center-attendees aged 60 years and older with uncontrolled HTN. The primary outcome is change in systolic and diastolic BP from baseline to 12 months. The secondary outcomes are BP control at 12 months; changes in levels of physical activity; body weight; and number of daily servings of fruits and vegetables from baseline to 12 months. We hypothesize that seniors randomized to MINT-TLC compared to those in the HE group will exhibit: (1) a greater reduction in systolic and diastolic BP at 12 months; (2) a higher proportion of seniors with adequate BP control at 12 months; and (3) greater levels of physical activity; greater percent change in weight; and increase in intake of fruits and vegetables from baseline to 12 months.
