ผลการสำรวจการอ่านหนังสือของประชากร ปี2554 พบว่าการอ่านหนังสือของประชากรนอกเวลาเรียน/นอกเวลาทํางานซึ่งรวมการอ่านหนังสือทุกประเภทและการอ่านทางสื่ออิเล็กทรอนิกส์อื่น ๆ เช่น อินเทอร์เน็ต ซีดีฯลฯ ยกเว้น SMS หรือจดหมายอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ (E-mail) พบประเด็น ที่สำคัญดังนี้ เด็กเล็กอายุต่ำกว่า 6 ปีที่อ่านเองหรือผู้ใหญ่อ่านให้ฟังมีร้อยละ 53.5 เด็กผู้หญิงมีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือมากกว่าผู้ชายเล็กน้อย ( ร้อยละ 54.3 และ 52.7 ตามลําดับ )โดยเด็กเล็กในกรุงเทพมหานครมีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือสูงสุด (ร้อยละ 63.0) ส่วนผู้ที่มีอายุ 6 ปีขึ้นไปมีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือนอกเวลาเรียน/นอกเวลาทํางานร้อยละ 68.6 โดยผู้ชายมีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือสูงกว่าผู้หญิงเล็กน้อยและกลุ่มวัยเด็กมีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือสูงกว่าวัยอื่น รองลงมาคือกลุ่มเยาวชนกลุ่มวัยทำงานและกลุ่มวัยสูงอายุและในการสํารวจครั้งนี้ผู้ที่มีอายุ 6 ปีขึ้นไปได้ให้ข้อเสนอแนะในการรณรงค์ให้คนรักการอ่านหนังสือในหลายประเด็นที่น่าสนใจ เช่น หนังสือควรมีราคาถูกลง และมีเนื้อหาสาระน่าสนใจ รวมทั้งควรมีห้องสมุดประจําหมู่บ้าน/ชุมชนเป็นต้น
เมื่อเปรียบเทียบอัตราการอ่านหนังสือของประชากรซึ่งสำรวจไว้ในปี 2551 พบว่า ประชากรมีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือเพิ่มขึ้นโดยจะเห็นได้ชัดในกลุ่มเด็กเล็กอายุต่ำกว่า 6 ปีที่มีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือเพิ่มขึ้นมากคือ จากร้อยละ 36.0 เป็นร้อยละ 53.5 สำหรับกลุ่มผู้ที่มีอายุ 6 ปีขึ้นไปมีอัตราการอ่านหนังสือเพิ่มขึ้นเพียงเล็กน้อยจากร้อยละ 66.3 เป็นร้อยละ 68.6 ทั้งนี้อาจเนื่องจากมีการรณรงค์ส่งเสริมการอ่านร่วมกันหลายภาคส่วนสืบเนื่องมาจากเมื่อวันที่ 5 สิงหาคม 2552 คณะรัฐมนตรีได้ อนุมัติให้การอ่านเป็นวาระแห่งชาติโดยกําหนดให้วันที่ 2 เมษายนของทุกปีเป็นวันรักการอ่านและปี 2552 -2561 เป็นทศวรรษแห่งการอ่าน
