ลักษณะการศึกษาภาษาตามแนวภาษาศาสตร์
                การศึกษาภาษาของนักภาษาศาสตร์ มีลักษณะสำคัญอยู่ ๒ ประการ โดยศรีวิไล   พลมณี  (๒๕๔๕ : ๑๖ – ๑๗)  ได้กล่าวไว้ดังต่อไป
              ๑. ศึกษาภาษาด้วยวิธีวิทยาศาสตร์
                วิธีศึกษาแบบวิทยาศาสตร์ มีการควบคุมตัวแปรต่าง ๆ ในการทดลอง ตลอดจนผลการศึกษาทดลองนั้นจะต้องพิสูจน์ได้ การศึกษาจึงเน้นการปฏิบัติทดลองจริง (Empirical) ความเที่ยงแท้แน่นอน (Exact) และความเป็นวัตถุวิสัย (Objective) นักภาษาศาสตร์นั้นเมื่อสนใจภาษาใดจะใช้ความพยายามแยกแยะภาษานั้นออกมาเพื่อดูว่าภาษานั้นมีองค์ประกอบอย่างไร เหมือนช่างเครื่องยนต์ที่รื้อส่วนประกอบของเครื่องยนต์ออกมาดู
