ดอยอินทนนท์ อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ เชียงใหม่ ประกาศเป็นอุทยานฯ เมื่อพ.ศ.2515 ประกาศเป็นอุทยานฯ เป็นลำดับที่ 6 ของประเทศไทย มีพื้นที่ 482.4 ตารางกิโลเมตร ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ในเขตอำเภอจอมทอง อำเภอแม่แจ่ม อำเภอแม่วาง และกิ่งอำเภอดอยหล่อ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ดอยอินทนนท์แต่เดิมดอยนี้มีชื่อว่า "ดอยหลวง" หรือ "ดอยอ่างกา"ดอยหลวง มาจากขนาดของดอยที่ใหญ่มาก ชาวบ้านจึงเรียกกันว่า "ดอยหลวง" (หลวง: เป็นภาษาเหนือ แปลว่า ใหญ่)

อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ เดิมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ "ป่าสงวนแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์" ต่อมาได้ถูกสำรวจและจัดตั้งเป็นหนึ่งในสิบสี่ ป่าที่ทางรัฐบาลให้ดำเนินการเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติซึ่งครั้งแรกกรมป่าไม้เสนอ ให้กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์กำหนดพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ให้มี พื้นที่ 1,000 ตร.กม. หรือประมาณ 625,000 ไร่ แต่เนื่องจากพื้นที่ชุมชนต่าง ๆ อาศัยอยู่ก่อนหลายชุมชน จึงทำการสำรวจใหม่ และกันพื้นที่ที่ราษฎร อยู่มาก่อน และคาดว่าจะมีปัญหาในอนาคตออก จึงเหลือพื้นที่ที่จะประกาศเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ 270 ตร.กม. หรือประมาณ 168,750 ไร่ ประกาศลงวันที่ 2 ตุลาคม 2515 และในวันที่ 13 มิถุนายน 2521 รัฐบาลประกาศพื้นที่เพิ่มอีกเป็น 482.4 ตร.กม. อำเภอจอมทอง อำเภอแม่แจ่ม อำเภอแม่วาง และกิ่งอำเภอดอยหล่อ มีความสูงจากระดับน้ำทะลปานกลาง 400-2,565.3341 เมตร เป็นภูเขาที่สูงที่สุดในประเทศไทยสำหรับวัตถุประสงค์ในการกำหนดที่ดินให้ เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ตาม พ.ร.บ. อุทยานแห่งชาติ พ.ศ. 2504 หมวด 1 มาตรา 6
