After the transition to the Italian barracks was, until, in 1924 , thanks to Antonio Avena , director of the civic museums and Forlati Ferdinando , architect of the Superintendence, a restoration was made in medieval style and became the seat of the municipal collections of art Verona , with works ranging from ' Middle Ages to the eighteenth century . With the restoration-style towers were raised, restored walkways and decorated interiors in medieval and Renaissance style. [1]
During the Second World War Verona was one of the most bombed city in Italy because of its strategic location and the presence of many ministries of the Italian Social Republic , [2] and during one of the numerous Allied raid on 4 January 1945 , it was Castelvecchio also severely damaged, and only a few months later the fleeing Germans blew up all the bridges of Verona, including the bridge of Castelvecchio . Subsequently, the restoration of the castle was commissioned to Carlo Scarpa and the restoration of the bridge to Libero Cecchini with the superintendent Pietro Gazzola.
