นับตั้งแต่ปีพุทธศักราช ๒๔๙๖ เป็นต้น

นับตั้งแต่ปีพุทธศักราช ๒๔๙๖ เป็นต้นมา กองโบราณคดี กรมศิลปากรได้ดำเนินการสำรวจ ขุดแต่ง และบูรณะโบราณสถานเมืองโบราณสุโขทัยโดยได้พบโบราณวัตถุเป็นจำนวนมาก รัฐบาลจึงพิจารณาเห็นว่าควรสร้างพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติขึ้นเพื่อเก็บรักษามรดกทางวัฒนธรรมที่มีความสำคัญของชาติและจัดแสดงเผยแพร่เพื่อการศึกษาต่อไป ต่อมาในปีพุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๓ - ๒๕๐๖ กรมศิลปากรจึงดำเนินการจัดสร้างพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติขึ้นในพื้นที่บริเวณเมืองโบราณสุโขทัย โดยใช้งบประมาณของรัฐบาลสมทบกับเงินบริจาคของประชาชน

พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติแห่งนี้ มีชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการว่า “พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ รามคำแหง” ตั้งขึ้นตามพระนามของพ่อขุนรามคำแหงมหาราช วีรกษัตริย์ไทยผู้ปกครองเมืองสุโขทัยในช่วงต้นพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๙ โบราณวัตถุส่วนใหญ่ที่จัดแสดงได้จากการขุดแต่งบูรณะโบราณสถานในเขตเมืองเก่าสุโขทัย เมืองโบราณใกล้เคียง และอีกส่วนหนึ่งเป็นโบราณวัตถุ ศิลปวัตถุ ที่พระโบราณวัตถาจารย์ (พระราชประสิทธิคุณ) อดีตเจ้าอาวาสวัดราชธานีและเจ้าคณะจังหวัดสุโขทัย ได้อนุญาตให้เคลื่อนย้ายจากพิพิธภัณฑ์ในวัดราชธานีมาเก็บรักษาและจัดแสดงในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ รามคำแหง โดยมี หม่อมเจ้าสุภัทรดิศ ดิศกุล ภัณฑารักษ์เอก กองโบราณคดี และนายทิพา สังขะวัฒนะ นายช่างศิลปโท กองสถาปัตยกรรม กรมศิลปากร ดำเนินการจัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุตามหลักวิชาการเพื่อให้เป็นพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติด้านโบราณคดี ประวัติศาสตร์ และประวัติศาสตร์ศิลปะอย่างแท้จริง

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช และ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์พระบรมราชินีนาถ เสด็จพระราชดำเนินเป็นองค์ประธาน ในพิธีเปิดพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ รามคำแหง เมื่อวันที่ ๒๕ มกราคม พุทธศักราช ๒๕๐๗

ต่อมาในวาระครบรอบ ๗๐๐ ปี ลายสือไท เมื่อปีพุทธศักราช ๒๕๒๖ รัฐบาลได้ดำเนินการก่อสร้าง“อาคารอนุสรณ์ลายสือไท” เพื่อร่วมเฉลิมฉลองในวาระดังกล่าว โดยสมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราชฯ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร เสด็จพระราชดำเนินเป็นองค์ประธานในพิธีเปิดอาคาร เมื่อวันที่ ๑๗ พฤศจิกายน พุทธศักราช ๒๕๒๖ ภายในอาคารมีห้องประชุมสำหรับการสัมมนา ส่วนจัดแสดงนิทรรศการภาพ เรื่อง “สุโขไท – สุโขทัย อดีตและปัจจุบัน” การจัดแสดงเกี่ยวกับการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ รามคำแหง ส่วนให้บริการนักท่องเที่ยว และจำหน่ายบัตรค่าธรรมเนียม
